The Ford Escape compact SUV balances strong gas mileage with smooth performance in its drivetrains. There are two choices for customers. The base engine has three cylinders and a turbocharger and gets 181 horsepower, and it uses an automatic transmission. It is rated for 34 highway miles per gallon and 28 city miles per gallon. The upgrade choice is a V4, also turbocharged, with 250 horsepower and the same automatic transmission. The fuel economy estimates drop a little bit for the V4, and they lose another 1 MPG if you also choose to add on all wheel drive. Both drivetrains have great handling that responds easily to the wheel as well as consistent, smooth braking, and the fuel economy for both engines is among the better options in the compact SUV class.
